Templar Outpost St. Mandel, Kingdom of France
Damase inspected his horse, and was about to mount when a messenger stepped out of the outpost, flagging him down.
âExcuse me, sir, but are you Sir Damase de Sissey?â
âI am.â
The messenger smiled, opening his bag. âI have dispatches here meant for you from several outposts. Iâm to deliver them to you at the fortress, but inside they said you were here. Do you want them now, or should I leave them in Paris for you?â
Damase shook his head. âNo, Iâll take them now.â
The young man handed over half a dozen folded pages, noting the delivery on his manifest before rushing off to deliver his remaining messages. Damase returned to the outpost, acknowledging the others inside, then took a seat, breaking the seal on the first message. He quickly scanned the contents, the descriptions of the transactions as detailed as he could have hoped for, then opened the second message. He began the third then paused.
He reread the description, then flipped through the others, finding similar descriptions, all from transactions within the past day, all in the counterclockwise loop around the city.
Could it be?
He opened the next dispatch and his jaw dropped as he found another matching transaction.
Located here, only minutes ago.
He leaped to his feet, rushing toward the knight still manning his post. He tossed the dispatch on the table, jabbing his finger on it. âThis man that was just here. Describe him!â
The man glanced at the page then tapped the description. âI did. Right here.â He jutted his chin toward the door. âYou walked right past him when you came in.â
Damaseâs eyes narrowed as he tried to remember, his mind not what it once was when it came to irrelevant interactions. He gasped as the memory was found. âYou mean the one with the stomach bug?â
âI donât know about that, but come to think of it, he didnât appear well.â
âHave you ever seen him before?â
He shrugged. âI donât think so, but I canât be sure. I see a lot of people.â He thought for a moment, scratching his beard. âYou know, maybe I have. I think a couple of times, maybe?â
Damase struggled to contain his excitement. âAnd the amounts. Were they small or large?â
âIâm not sure about before, but todayâs was large, at least for his type.â
âWhat do you mean?â
The man shrugged. âWell, heâs obviously not nobility, now, is he?â
Damase had to agree. And he had to act. âSend a dispatch to Paris that I think this is the man Iâve been looking for.â
âWhy him? Whatâs he done?â
Damase ignored the questions, rushing out the door, peering in all directions for the man, but coming up empty. He leaped on his horse and headed north, the direction the man had been going when he last saw him, though for all he knew he might have doubled back to the south.
He had to take a chance and commit.
North it is.
He said a silent prayer, then urged his steed forward, and hopefully toward the answers he was so desperately in search of.
